French idioms. Sometimes colourful, sometimes funny and sometimes serious; idioms are a great way to get into the French language. These French idioms are designed to give you a bit of an insight into French culture and society. Used correctly and idioms give a real sense of being fluent in another language. They’re also just quite fun!

Get the most out of these French Idioms

We’ve collated a few of the most useful French Idioms. We’ve had a native speaker (one of our Language Gurus) record each one of them for you.

Listen carefully to each recording. Record yourself saying the same phrase or word out loud. Go back and listen to the original and keep going! Before you know it, you’ll be able to start chatting to a native speaker. Most important of, you’ll be able to start doing things in French. You’ll be using the language; not studying it.
